Grenada’s Hidden Treasures
WATERFALLS July 2018 Falls Without a Name Two blocks down the road from Annandale Falls is this gem. I suppose it does not have a name because it is not perennial, but intermittent. Since now we are in the rainy season, it surpases its sister in size & beauty. Annandale Falls The smallest of all the island falls, 30’, this is popular to visitors and locals alike, due to its accessibility. The platform on the right allows for jumping in, however, there are men who jump from 50’ ht. … [Read more...]
SABA
Ever heard of Saba? Me neither! A lovely and unique island in the Dutch Caribbean, Saba is definitely worth a visit. All Saba’s towns are located on the upper plateaus of the mountains, the few areas where it is relatively flat. Being volcanic, there is no coastline to speak of, the mountains drop straight into the sea. This is why we had to park on a mooring ball, rather than anchor (the ocean floor was 200’ deep below our boat!) We love the names of the towns, The Bottom (which … [Read more...]
The Baths – a grown up playground
Reason enough to come to the BVIs, the Baths provide their visitors with an experience like no other. Visiting them has been our favorite day (so far) in the 7 months of our wonderful sailing journey. At the Baths, there are several 'active' opportunities, such as swimming, snorkeling, hiking, or rock climbing. On the other hand, you may prefer to simply take a peek of the tidal pools from shore. Perhaps, instead, you'd rather simply enjoy an adult libation while enjoying the views from the … [Read more...]
AFTERMATH USVI & BVI Do you want to know the state of the state after Maria and Irma in the USVI and BVI? This report is a hopeful one! On average, the Virgin Islands have hurricanes pass nearby, every 3 years, and are directly impacted every 8 years. The situation on the ground is fairly extreme here as far as manmade structures are concerned; they are either in ruins or newly rebuilt, with not much in-between. This is a consistent observation throughout these … [Read more...]
Magens Bay, USVI
Exploring is part of the Dauntless experience! Our day hike in the hills of St. Thomas provided a multitude of unexpected pleasures. From our anchorage in Charlotte Amalie harbor, we took a cab into the mountains to an unmarked driveway, which serves as the trailhead. Turns out the taxi driver was off by one driveway (luckily the homeowner quickly set us on the straight and narrow path!) We weren’t sure of the condition of the Discovery Nature Trail at MagensBay, post-hurricanes. It was … [Read more...]
Samana
We landed in a beautiful marina/resort on the E side of the Dominican Republic (DR) as we continue to head SE towards the Virgin Islands and The Grenadines. Marina Puerto Bahia is stunning. Sitting on the edge of the lovely Bahia Bay, surrounded by mountains, near the town of Samana, the resort boasts a marina, hotel, spa, pool with a night club (Ocean Club,) multiple restaurants and residences. The architecture is fresh and the staff attentive and welcoming (even as we mangle our attempt to … [Read more...]
Luperon
A pleasant surprise Not knowing much about the Dominican Republic (DR,) we’ve been quite happy in this place. As DR is en route to the Virgin Islands and St. Vincent and the Grenadines (our charter destinations for the next 12 months,) it made sense to stop and rest here. After the flat landform of the Bahamas & Turks & Caicos, it is a lovely sight to come upon DR with the highest peak in all the Caribbean, Pico Duarte, at 3,098 m! It is beautiful here: landform, lush … [Read more...]
